Define the Path to Get You There In this last activity, you will write short-term goals to help you reach your career development goal.
Short-term goals are action steps to achieve your career development goal.
These steps will include time frames and resources to help you succeed.
Since short-term goals are smaller and more manageable, they will make your career development goal easier to achieve. Short-term goals normally take less than a year to complete. They also create milestones that you can celebrate while on your way to success!
Here’s an Example:
SMART Goal:

I will apply to 3 specialized training programs for advanced imaging techniques within the next 2 months to become an x-ray technician by June 2026.
Short Term Goals:

  • Research training programs by next Friday.
  • Look at finances and talk to HR about what tuition help is available.
  • Talk to spouse about creating a support system.


To Create Each Short-Term Goal You Will:
  1. Make a list of action steps you’ll need to complete to achieve your SMART career development goal. These action steps are your
    Short-Term Goals.  Think about activities like researching college programs, applying for financial aid, updating your resume, applying for next-step positions within your organization, etc.
  2. Enter a description in the Action Step field.
  3. Determine the resources (if any) you will need to complete this goal. Enter these in the
    Resources field.  Resources might include people who will help or support you, access to technology, financial resources, information (books, online), etc.
  4. Set a deadline date to complete the goal. Enter this in this (XX) field.

Your SMART Career Development Goal:
I truly want to work a day time job, Monday through Friday. I am seeking a position that I am independent and have daily task to complete with little supervision. Within a year I would like to find a English Grammar Writing course to help me accomp
