Part 4: Questions and Next Steps

Now that you have reviewed your CareerCare Report Summary, you may have questions or wonder what to do next. Below are answers to common questions and suggestions for the next steps you can take to explore career options in your organization.

Common Questions You Might Have
  1. What if I don’t seem to be a good fit for my organization’s in-demand jobs?
The listed in-demand jobs are not the only jobs your organization needs. Meet with your career advisor, manager, or an HR rep to explore other jobs you are a good fit for.

  2. What if I am most interested in a job that is NOT on my organization’s in-demand job list?
Talk to your career advisor, manager, HR, or other leaders. There may be opportunities available that better match your interests.

  3. What if I need a lot of education to get the job I am most interested in?
Realize that it may take a bit of time to reach that job goal but there are steps you can take to get started now. Maybe your Top Job requires a bachelor's degree. Start working on a certification or an associate degree now to get an entry-level position in your area of interest. Then over time, work towards your bachelor's degree and your dream job!

Questions for You to Think About and Ask Your Leaders
  1. If I need further education, are there options for tuition reimbursement at my organization?

  2. Does the job I am most interested in align with my values and will it allow me to lean into my personality strengths so I am most successful?

  3. What does a typical career path look like for my Top Job in this organization? How can I gain skills and experience while I work toward the required education?

Suggested Next Steps
  1. Complete the Obstacle Analysis in Step 3 of CareerCare.
Here, you will consider common challenges people face when making a career change like time and money for getting the required education. You will also identify steps you can take to overcome these challenges.
  2. Network and learn from those already doing jobs that are of interest to you.
You can learn a lot from people that are already working in the jobs you’re interested in. Don’t be shy! Most people are happy to talk about their work and share their knowledge.
  3. Share your Career journey with those invested in your success.
Find those people who you know will support and encourage you along the way. These people may be family members or friends, coworkers, or even a boss. Share your goals and motivation with these people. Then share with them when challenges arise. They will help you stay focused and motivated so you can accomplish your goal!

  4. Complete the CLiMB microlearning “Talk About Your Goals and Talents” in Step 3 to discover ways you can gain support from others to help you grow your career.

It's color-coded to make it even easier to understand.

Median scores are derived from the ACT WorkKeys Profile Database found at http://jobprofiles.act.org/

HIGH
Your skills look like they match or exceed the job requirements.
MEDIUM
Your skills might be a match to the job requirements, but you will likely need to do some academic preparation to bring your skill level up. Your skill is one level lower than the typical job requirement.
LOW
Your skills might be a match to the job requirements, but you will likely need to do a significant amount of academic preparation to bring your skill level up. Your skill level is two or more levels lower than the typical job requirement.

Now that you know what the colors mean, look across a job title and compare the scores and colors to see where you're ready now and where you might need academic preparation to be fully prepared to succeed. If you see jobs of interest to you with yellow or red in a skill area, also consider your Academic Satisfaction Score from your JOFI Career Interest Survey report.

IF YOUR ACADEMIC SATISFACTION SCORE IS:

HIGH or AVERAGE, you tend to enjoy academic programs, and may be motivated to study and improve your skill level to match any job-related skill level even if its currently yellow or red.

LOW, you may not enjoy academic learning programs and may want to consider job titles that have a close match to your current skill level or those that require on-the-job training.

ACADEMIC SATISFACTION

MY RESULTS
Your Academic Satisfaction score indicates the degree to which you would enjoy academic activities. This score is not a measure of your ability to do work associated with academic school programs - it cannot predict your success as a student. Instead, it provides you with information on the type of learning that interests you most.

Now let's put all the pieces together to find jobs that match your career interests and your current skills.

Find My Next Career Move

(A) Find the Jobs that Fit Your CAREER INTEREST
In the table above, compare each of the job titles listed above to your Career Interest Survey results. Do your career interests suggest that a job is a good fit for you? Put HIGH, MEDIUM, or LOW in the Career Interest Fit column.
To get you started, a "HIGH" or "MEDIUM" has been filled in if the job title or a similar one appeared in the Similar to Extremely Similar range on your Career Interest Survey results. If the space is blank, then the job title appeared in the Neutral to Dissimilar range. Feel free to change this if you disagree.

(B) Assess Your OVERALL JOB FIT and Find Your Next Career Move
Next, look across each job title and see to what extent your career interests and current skills suggest that the job is a fit for you and could be your next career move. Put HIGH, MEDIUM, or LOW in the Overall Job Fit column.
To get you started, a "HIGH" or "MEDIUM" has been filled based on your Skill Fit and your Career Interest Fit results. If the space is blank, then your Skill Fit and/or Career Fit do not appear to be a match. Feel free to change this if you disagree.

As you consider both your interest and skill fit, be sure you have a good understanding of these jobs and career pathways.

Log in to the Catalyst Learning Online Portal at www.catalystlearning.com. Click on the Explore Jobs tab to learn more about these jobs and to read job descriptions from your organization.

Take Your Next Steps
You've done a lot of hard work completing the WorkKeys® and/or JOFI® assessments and Career Interest Survey, and analyzing your results. This work has helped you identify jobs and careers that are a potential fit that you might want to explore for your next career move.

Surveys and tests provide valuable insight and can be a great start for choosing jobs and careers. It's important that you do the additional research to fully understand the job and career potential, as well as the education and training required, to be sure it's an overall fit for you.

While many people can successfully perform any role with enough training and determination, we usually gravitate toward jobs that fit our interests and allow us to use our strengths. The most satisfying and enjoyable jobs are those you are interested in and have the skills required to perform well.

Here are a few ways to start your research.

  1. Learn about the talent needs in your organization.
  2. Talk with your career coach, your manager, and others to learn more about the jobs your hospital needs most and where there are opportunities for you to grow. Your organization has identified the jobs in the chart above and encourages you to think about your interest in these.
  3. Network and learn from those already doing jobs that are of interest to you.
  4. You can learn a lot from people that are already working in the jobs you're interested in. Don't be shy! Most people are happy to talk about their work and share their knowledge. Ask if you can interview them to find out what they like about the job, how they got it and whether they think it would be a good job for you. Job shadowing is another great technique to learn about jobs. When you "shadow", you see first-hand what it's like to work in that job.
  5. Research jobs fast-growing jobs in the healthcare industry and your hospital.
  6. Use the online resources in the Appendix to learn about other jobs, their education requirements, what they pay, and their opportunities for growth. **
  7. **Identify 3 jobs to explore further.
  8. Use your results and the suggestions above to identify three specific jobs you want to explore and how you'll do that. Visit the Exploration>good fit/next steps/Goals Section in CareerCare and assign the specific actions you'll take to learn more about those jobs. That information will appear in the chart below.
